Big Names Line Up For Juicy Lucy Classic on Sunday 25 April

Some of South Africa’s best mountain bikers will be competing this Sunday (25 April) at the Juicy Lucy Classic - including last year’s winner Andrew Hill, KwaZulu-Natal’s top junior rider Luke Roberts and Sara Scott, the current leader in the KwaZulu-Natal Multi Sport Series.  Leading riders Craig Paul and Brendon Davids have also confirmed their spots at the start.

Last year’s winner, Andrew Hill, said he would definitely be out to defend his position when the 40km Juicy Lucy Classic kicks off at 06h30 on Sunday, April 25 at the Mid-Illovo Club in KwaZulu-Natal. He pointed out that the course provided an opportunity to ride through an exciting variety of terrain. “These are areas through which we wouldn’t normally ride and Mid-Illovo is right on our doorstep!”

“I’m going for the win, this year,” declared top junior Luke Roberts who was one of the top three in his age group last year.  He began riding when he was 14 and will turn 17 just two days after he crosses the finishing line at the 2010 Juicy Lucy Classic. “Last year’s race was great. The course has awesome pieces of single track and provides lots of opportunities for overtaking. It is also well marked,” he said.

Sara Scott, who leads the KZN Multi Sport Series, said the 2010 Juicy Lucy Classic would be her third. She said that she participated in most of the country’s mountain biking events and found this route particularly enjoyable because of the lovely stretches of single track.

According to race organizer Brett Austen-Smith, entries are streaming in with many last minute entrants.  Late entries will be accepted on the day and registration closes at 08h30 on Sunday 25 April.

The Juicy Lucy Classic includes the 40km Juicy Lucy Classic and 18km Gwahumbe Fun Ride which will see participants taking in the spectacular view over Mid-Illovo and negotiating the rugged terrain through the Gwahumbe Game Reserve. Those who are not up for something this wild can enjoy the 10km and 5km Ola Milky Lane Fun Rides (which incidentally attracts all ages including pensioners!) For the first time, the Juicy Lucy Classic also incorporates the Husqvarna 18km Trail Run and an 8km trail run / walk.
