Andrew Warr Wins Juicy Lucy Classic!

The third Juicy Lucy Classic Challenge held today, Sunday 25 April, in Mid-Illovo in KwaZul-Natal was a resounding success with a record 1 500 participants .  “As a fairly new race in mountain biking, as well as the introduction of two trail runs this year, the turnout far exceeded our expectations.  It was also fantastic to see many of the multi-sport athletes taking the opportunity to participate in the early morning trail runs before heading off on their bikes,” said Craig MacKenzie, director of Juicy Lucy.

The race results were uncertain right to the end with lead positions changing several times.  Andrew Warr won the 40km Juicy Lucy Classic in 1:30.10.  This is the second time Warr has won the race, the first time being in 2008 in 01:37:36.  Leading KwaZulu-Natal rider, Craig Paul, finished second and last year’s champion, Andrew Hill, took third place.

Amy-Jane Mundy, who was the second lady home in the 40km, led the women’s race until the 25km mark at which stage she was overtaken by Jean Hackland who went on to win the race in 1.53.52.

The 18km race, ridden mostly through the beautiful Gwahumbe Game Reserve, was a popular choice today and Craig Jarrett finished first in the men’s race in 0:49.10.  The ladies race was won by Jade Hattingh in 1:02.34.

Iain Don-Wauchope won the Husqvarna 18km Trail Run and then went on to come within the top 10 in the 40km Juicy Lucy Classic mountain bike race.

Sara Scott, who leads the KZN Multi Sport Series, won the 8km trail run and crossed the finish line of the 40km Juicy Lucy Classic mountain bike race as one of the top five ladies.  This is Scott’s third Juicy Lucy Classic. She said that she found the mountain bike race particularly enjoyable because of the lovely stretches of single track.

“The trail run was very well received and will definitely be a growth area for next year,” said race organiser, Brett Austen-Smith.

Praise was high for the organisers and community with feedback on the race’s challenging terrain, spectacular vistas, well-manned water tables and excellent markings and marshalling.

MacKenzie said the race - which includes the 40km Juicy Lucy Classic, the 18km Gwahumbe Game Reserve Fun Ride, the 5km and 10km Ola Milky Lane Kids Rides and the Husqvarna 18km Trail Run and an 8km trail run / walk - was tailor-made for both professional athletes and families.

There was something for everyone, including those family members who turned out in full force to support the riders and runners this year.  The participants’ hard work paid off with a refreshing Aquelle flavoured water drink when they crossed the finish line, whilst the children indulged in Ola Milky Lane treats.

The sponsors of this race - Juicy Lucy, Gwahumbe Game Reserve & Spa, Ola Milky Lane, Team Clothing and Husqvarna were all thrilled with the participation and spirit.  The Mid-Illovo community is in agreement that this race was flawlessly executed by the organisers.
