PETTERSON AND BAILEY CROWNED PRONUTRO AFRICANX TRAILRUN CHAMPIONS

Organisers of South Africa’s most exciting multi-stage trail running event, the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance, opted to cancel the third and final stage of this adrenaline pumping event after wet and windy weather conditions experienced in the early hours of Sunday morning (09 May 2010) caused havoc en-route.

According to event organiser Michael Meyer, athlete safety was the driving force behind the decision to call off Stage Three.  “We knew that bad weather was on the cards for Sunday, but we decided to wait till 02h00 on the morning of the race before making the decision to cancel the stage.  Once our route scouts confirmed that the weather had rendered the route unsafe for runners, the decision was made.  We are sad that runners could not complete the final stage, but we are positive that the routes experienced during Stage One and Stage Two will leave runners with an awesome feeling of accomplishment and we look forward to having them back next year,” says Meyer.

Warren Petterson and Michael Bailey of team ‘ProNutro Boys’ were the first team across the finish line after both Stage One and Stage Two of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance in Kleinmond on Friday, 07 and Saturday, 08 May 2010.  They completed the two stages in an impressive combined time of
05hours16minutes12seconds. According to Petterson, the event was a real challenge.  “We’re saddened by the fact that we couldn’t complete Stage Three today as part of our strategy was to run well on the first two days, while ensuring that we had enough in the tank to run the field to pieces during the final stage.  The event was awesome with amazing routes that were really well marked.  All in all it was a lovely event,” says Petterson.  Team ‘Gu Energy Gel’ placed second in the men’s open category, while team ‘Velocity Sports Lab / Salomon’ finished third.

Linda Doke and Tatum Prins of team ‘Salomon Ladies’ managed a first place in the women’s open category of the event after completing the two stages in an inspiring combined time of 06hours40minutes39seconds.  Team ‘Tuks Girls Do It Now’ placed second, while team ‘Nature Conservation Corporation’ finished third.  Michelle Lombardi and Mark Collins were the first open mixed team to cross the finish line after both stages of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun.  Their combined winning time was an electrifying 06hours04minutes18seconds.  Team ‘Namaqua’ placed second, while team ‘Mojo’ finished third.

Stage One of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance was made up of a 25km route, while Stage Two was 42km in length.  Each route was planned in such a way that the participants had the opportunity to tackle a different breathtaking scenic route each day, which allowed them to enjoy the full diversity of the world-renowned Kogelberg Biosphere.  The routes were laid out on runner-friendly jeep and single tracks and included magnificent views of the ocean, mountains and waterfalls.  Teamwork formed an essential part of the race, as participants needed to rely on each other’s experience and expertise in order to complete the route.

Each morning participants were able to stock up on energy before the race at the Bokomo Breakfast Zone.  Family and friends could also join in the fun by showing their support at various vantage points along the route.
